A brief explanation - when I suggested that Coots in the North may have answered the Tom/Nancy question, I was not suggesting that there would have been any romance. Indeed, I agree that AR eschews these issues (rightly in my view). What I had in mind was that there would have had to be some response that might have either ruled out or allowed the possibilities to be limited. Of course that may not have happened - after all, no-one has suggested the romantic possibilities of the Mastodon!
In my view, any sequel would be likely to consider the effect of WWII on these characters, or some of them. I can imagine some very interesting character developments. To write this would probably requre an entirely different approach to that of AR. The good news for TARS is that I have no intention of doing this myself.
