A couple of years ago I suggested to Roger Wardale that TARS hold a competition for the best-written chapter of a ‘Ransome adventure’. It could be the beginning, or part of the middle, or the end. The winner would be the best attempt at recreating the genuine feel of a Ransome text, and that feeling that you had to read more. A reasonable prize should be offered, say £250 (more if possible), because a lot of work would be involved. The winner (and runners-up, if space allowed) would be published in Mixed Moss. Apart from entertainment, our clumsy attempts would also help to show exactly how and why AR’s style is so effective. Roger was generally receptive to the idea. Maybe it could be resurrected. Perhaps we could get our hand in first with ‘Fan Fiction’.

(I am presuming that our use of AR’s characters etc would be covered by the blanket copyright permission extending to TARS publications. In the lengthy discussion of Sequels recently I am not sure everyone realised that even if the story-line is completely your own, you can’t use AR’s characters without permission. Oh, and by the way, Peter R, I envisage a special judging panel for this competition, NOT Tarpaulin.)
