You are quite right - although judging by the amount of water in the lake after the recent gales you would not think it!
There used to be a weir at the foot of the lake that kept the lake level high enough to enable the copper barges (rowing but with subsdiary sail) to berth at Nibthwaite even in the driest of summers. The weir was, I understand, a fairly crude affair made with massive planks.
Would it were that our traditional launches could berth at Nibthwaite these days. We now call at seven jetties around the lake providing a service for walkers and those wanting to explore the very best of Ransome Country.
