Jib-booms and bobstays! The Crake vs. Pull
Beck thread is almost as good as the - which Island is
really Wild Cat - controversey. Iain, top marks for
the field research. Must take a closer look at
Pull Beck myself.

Getting back to where this thread started, it appears
that the level of both Coniston and Windmere has
dropped (or been deliberately lowered?) since AR's
time. Its ironic that if either was a canal there
would probably be an energetic preservation society
campaigning vigorously to restore the right of
navigation to Nibthwaite or inshore of Wild Cat Island.

Now, Coniston may not be a canal, but with its links to
Campbell, Ransome, Collingwood, Ruskin et al. the
restoration of its navigation is surely a worthwhile
objective.

If a simple wooden dam (which could be removed during
the monsoon season) would restore water levels, then
I for one would be happy to campaign for and help
contribute to its construction.

Does anyone else out there think this worth pursuing
further?
