Can anyone explain all this fuss about the ‘real’ Beckfoot in recent messages, with ludicrous hints of conspiracy, TARS’ ‘murky past’ etc? Does it make an atom of difference whether one of the many attractive lakeside houses near Coniston or Windermere is more like Beckfoot than any of the others? I must have seen a dozen candidates in my own travels. As far as I am concerned, the only ‘real’ Beckfoot is in my head, and I know every inch of it – lawn, promontory, boathouse, pigeon loft etc. Yes, sure, it’s a bit of fun to go about looking for ‘real’ AR locations (Roger Wardale got two books out of it), but do people really have to get steamed up about it? Sense of proportion or what? (It may all be a spoof, I suppose)
