The quotation reminds me once again what an extraordinarily well-read little girl Titty was. I've recently had the pleasure of teaching Swallows and Amazons to 50 intelligent and interested English Deparment undergraduates: sadly, only one of them managed to identify the quotation at the head of Chapter One, the source of Titty's name of Darien for the headland from which they could see Wild Cat Island.
