When did the maps begin to be reproduced so poorly?

Both of the editions I read as a child - 40s hardbacks and 70s paperbacks (these had a single AR illustration on the cover and a blue or yellow background) had much better quality reproductions than the contemporary hardbacks and paperbacks I now own. The current maps look like they've been photocopied! The writing has filled in and some markers are just blobs. What are they using, cardboard plates? What edition do I have to buy to get decent reproduction?

And while I'm here, I think Ian E-N deserves a bouquet for his Tarboard work. I wouldn't want his job (though I could probably use some of his tact and restraint).
