My recollection is that Christina Hardyment classified PD, ML & GN as stories within stories beuse A) the children were shot at, thus rupturing the suspension of disbelief we maintain in the other books, and B) because they don't take place at specifically named times, mostly school holidays, I think, except maybe for WH.
I'm also a wee bit toey about GN being classified this way, and ML as well. Mainly because they have never challenged my suspension of belief! And these days you could make a case for being shot at being a more likely experience for children than camping and sailing alone. Heh heh heh.
