There certainly is a curved line descending from the stern of Goblin in my first US edition, with Ransome illustrations. If it's not a painter, then what is it?

On the subject of borders - SW is the only one of the books to have borderless or partially borderless full page illustrations (except for ship plans) if you'll grant me that night scenes are bordered. It also has more full-page illustrations in landscape orientation than all the other books combined. How certain can we be that the Brotherton illustrations are the originals, not Ransome's revisions for the publisher?
