Well shiver my timbers - you're absolutely right, Jon, my apologies. The US edition does indeed have the painter, but the original Cape first does not. Could it be that some eagle-eyed American proof-reader realised from the text that there should be one? That's certainly the only difference between the two drawings.
As to the originality of the Brotherton drawings - it would be difficult to tell whether they are revisions as there is no correspondence with them, they are loose in paper folders inside a box-file. However, most of the drawings from the other books are in the same format - black ink either on thin card or on some kind of thick tracing paper. Next time I'm there I'll have another look.
