I've built a database of the illustrations in my various S&A volumes since the presence or absence of the border and the sudden onslaught of landscape oriented pictures piqued my curiosity. I still need to get it fully analysed, though. Only plausible explanation I could come up with was that with wartime austerity measures coming in around SW, the publisher might have requested, or Ransome suggested, revisions which filled more of the plate with significant data, rather than sky or water.

Curious that the MacMillan and JC first editions differ there. There's another datapoint (albeit late) for Wayne Hammond.
