As I understand it, the locations of GN are mostly (all?) real, but gathered from various places AR visited. For example the castle is Uig Lodge in Uig on the Isle of Lewis. It seems very likely that the gorge is based on the gorge very close to Uig lodge. The drawing from Scrubber's Cove looking across to the Pteradactyl was drwn either from the window of or very close by.

Some seem to be sure that they have found the loch.

I've not heard of anyone finding the definitive 'Pict house' yet!

So, we can be pretty sure of the location of GN (Isle of Lewis) but not the precise places - as we can be sure that SD is set in the Lakes, but there is debate as to which precise valley. Both GN and SD are not one precise real place - they are composites of various places AR visited.

The lesser interest in the true GN locations is probably down to the fact that they only appear in one book, are far, and difficult to reach, from most people's home towns.
