Yes, it would, but so would a lateen or standing lug sail. Look at any Sailfish-type sailboard, or Swallow for that matter. IIRC, the junk was a highly-maneuverable design which was surprisingly (to the first Europeans to see them) maneuverable at all points of sailing.
