I agree with the comments about the the excellent quality of the AGM 2000 edition of despatches, but I am fascinated by the BACK cover. I don't have access to any modern OS maps (I live in Houston, Texas), so I wasn't able to directly compare the old with new, but I do have an AA book of walks in Britain which has some extracts from OS maps, and it is very interesting to see the changes, particularly in the Bowness area - did the NT sell a part of its area just southwest of Bowness?

However, the reason for my post is the observation is that this particular map is obviously a treasure map :-)

Just east of the 'N' in 'Windemere' there is an arrow and an 'X'. Does anyone know the significance of this marking, before hundreds of TARS descend on some unspecting farmer's field with shovels!

PS Robert Dilley, please note I said Windemere, not Lake Windemere, although as I am sure he is aware, there is a Lake Windemere in the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia. Not as nice as its namesake, but the mountains are higher.
