Corned beef is one of those things that differ depending on where you are. In Britain, it is shredded salted cooked beef pressed into a can and usually eaten cold, in a sandwich or with a salad or sometimes heated up in a hash with potatoes and onions and maybe an egg.
In the US it is a joint of beef brined and spiced and boiled until tender and usually eaten hot on St Patrick's day, a dish almost never seen in Ireland.
Pressed beef seems to be a version of the British corned beef found in France but maybe Ransome used it as an alternative name for canned corn beef,
