In P&M Scarab, like the Swallow and Amazon has her mast stepped on the bottom of the boat see the picture of Scarab in Chapter 15, coming down through a hole in the front thwart. It is not described in detail but Nancy steps it in Chapter 15 and in Chapter 16 the D's do it while at anchor. That is a much more tricky activity in a small boat than while she is alongside a dock or quay.
