could have done - but then I might be banning someone who is completely blameless.

All I know is that there is an IP address, that might be shared by many people, that is the origin of messages with odd "name" fields.
TarBoard had severe problems a bit back with people posting messages using other peoples' names - masquerading.
This is a corrosive, confusing and possibly legally actionable matter.
The "Another strange post from 194.82.168.3 ?" tag is just to alert people that the message may not be what it seems.
