David Chapman should not be so blanket condemnatory of his countrymen. In the Boundary Waters area west of here, shared by Minnesota and Ontario (Quetico Provincial Park in Canada) NO motorised boats or vehicles of any kind are permitted. The speed-and-noise merchants regularly complain, but so far the ban has remained. That is a real wilderness experience!
I am particularly glad the Windermere ban has gone (is going) through. As a member of the Friends of the Lake District I wrote about three years ago to then PM John Major and his Environment Minister urging this ban, and got replies stating that they wouldn't do anything to affect local businesses. Last year I wrote to John Prescott, Deputy PM and Environment Minister, and got a more encouraging reply. I don't claim to have achieved the result single-handed, but I like to think my intervention helped!
