Last night I watched the 197? Swallows and Amazons film and was interested to note my reactions to some of the actors. "Susan" was much more lively than I have imagined from the books, in them she seems too much the mother hen to be quite real. In the film she seemed almost normal. "Roger", on the other hand, was just not Rogerish enough. He didn't seem to have the air of mischief that the Roger I know from the books has. "Peggy" was the perfect Swallows and Amazons Peggy, chatty and cheerful. In later books she seems to be much more subdued. While I like Ronald Fraser's work as an actor, he just isn't Captain Flint, physically or in manner. And whatever did happen to his pith helmet? It seems to have been sunk without trace because he left it in the lake when he came back up the rope ladder.
