Molasses is one of the fractions from sugar refining which is often used as a raw material for rum.
Molasses was used by the children as an exciting "non-native" name for the commonplace toffee. Mrs Dixon just gave them home-made toffee, formed by boiling up sugar and other stuff until it reaches the right viscocity.
Similarly corned beef is called pemmican, and lemonade and ginger beer is called rum
