Some weeks ago there was a TARBOARD discussion of child actors, and the difficulty of getting convincing performances. Anyone who saw ‘The Railway Children’ on ITV last night (Sunday), would surely agree with me that all three children were first-class, and Jemima Rooper in particular was a captivating ‘Roberta’. It shows it can be done. The adult parts seemed just right to me as well, and the script adaptation seemed sympathetic. I have always been one of those who were doubtful about Ransome adaptations, but this version of the Nesbit classic has made me change my mind. If we could only have a new AR film up to those standards. Ms Rooper might make a good ‘Nancy’, but they’d have to hurry.
