what is Grog, anyway?

On another thread, it was mentioned in passing that the main ingredient of grog is rum. This made me realize that I'm not quite sure what grog is - aside from the name of the big, hairy creature in the BC comic strip.

I know "grog" in SA stands for some sort of pirate-ish liquor, but are there specific details, or is it just a generic name for - well, pirate-ish liquor?
