Maybe I can recover some lost face.... "Grog" is now used generically for any alcoholic drink, especially one mixed with water. The term originated, apparently, when Admiral Vernon ordered that the rum issued to Royal Navy sailors should be diluted with water. Vernon was known as "Old Grog", not because he looked like a hairy monster (though he may have done) but because he habitually wore a grogram cloak. And before anyone asks, grogram is defined as "a kind of coarse cloth of silk and mohair". Splice the mainbrace!
