I agree, phasing out the elders is the way to go. Having said that, John and Jim could have gone on a Tilmanesque voyage to Greenland. Another possibility would have been for Dick et al to have met up with the Coniston Tigers who were actively exploring climbing routes on Kanchenjunga at the time.
