I've just finished reading the Oxus trilogy and, remembering that Arthur Ransome said that his characters remained vivid because he knew more about them than he revealed in the stories, I wonder whether the late authors, Pamela Whitlock and Katharine Hull, actually knew Maurice's secret. Considering their youth, I suspect not but does anyone know for a fact? I also wonder whether Ms. Hull is impressed that, with a severely sprained ankle, I have just stumped downstairs to check the spelling of her first name.
