Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world. It was first climbed in 1955 by the Charles Evans British expedition, which turned back a few meters from the sacred summit at the request of the Sikkim authorities:
Everest 8848m/29028ft (or 29029ft?)
K2 or Mt Godwin Austen 8611m/28250ft
Kanchenjunga 8586m/28169ft (or 8597m?)
But like Nansen (WH), Kanchenjunga must have been in the news in the thirties when AR was writing the books.
What else that was topical in the thirties does AR mention? I can only recall the Rajas etc that Mrs Barrables’ brother had to paint instead of going yachting (CC). And the Hullabaloos’ raucus “pop” music!
