Nancy is 12-12˝ in SA (1930) so could just have had her father (Bob Blackett) killed in WWI, but Peggy is younger which rules that idea out (as someone said recently)!
Talking of WWI, Col. Tommy Jolys was a small boy in the nursery 50 years ago (PM) so surely would have been in WWI. But he is described as a “hero of many wars”, ie AR was thinking of his 19th century childhood when the British Army was always fighting a small war in some corner of the British Empire!
