What a great bit of deduction Allan. After reading that I went back to my copy of S&A and found that when the Swallows and Amazons first meet - one of them is described as 'bigger than Captain John. The other was about the same size.' Obviously it doesn't necessarily mean that Nancy was older - girls at that age can be bigger than boys of the same age. But it adds to the information.
