I was sure that John Lambert's query was an FAQ, but I see that it isn't. Surely it ought to be? I first heard this topic discussed at the first TARS Lit Weekend in 1991 (see the Transcripts, if you have them). It has been mentioned on and off since. It has now become part of TARS folklore, to the extent that I heard a lady member at the recent Lakeside weekend say she just had to nip off and 'do something that Ransome never mentioned'. Despite the wide scope, we all knew what she meant.
