According to AR, his great grandfather, John Atkinson Ransome, founded the firm of ‘Ransome & Rapier’, the engineering firm in Ipswich (see Autobiography, p 17). You can still see their builders’ plates here and there – there is one on the locomotive turntable at Wansford, on the Nene Valley Railway. It actually says ‘Ransomes & Rapier’, so maybe one of John Ransome’s brothers joined him in the firm. I think the ‘Ransome’ lawnmower firm was founded by John’s brothers and was a separate business, but perhaps an E Region TAR will correct me on this (Peter – you must know!)
