That was Jill's comment -- Lady Polly was a good bit more severe.

I think there are similarities but more chance than choice -- Ransome's Susan
is after all valued for her "grownup-ness" but in the context of being a stand-in
for the parents, and accepts responsibility for her duties (largely self-adopted
as far as we can tell).

In any case there's no sign that Mr. Mate is becoming less of a Swallow.
