Susan not John is the one the natives trust for “housekeeping” ie cooking, keeping dry etc. She is also a bossy sort. In the opening of SD they have been on the train from the south to the Lake District, and Susan is tired because she always took charge on railway journeys and looked after her mother and Bridget and nurse and the others and all the small luggage (SD ch 1 p 20)! With Susan and Nancy and Daisy, AR does seem to go for bossy girls - shades of Genia ?? And in the S, A & D’s the girls are in a majority; in GN Dick sleeps in the main cabin with five girls!
