I find the different national characteristics of the English-speaking peoples quite fascinating. It puzzles me that Ransome didn’t go into this further, given Captain Flint’s colonial ramblings.

He was quite good at Dutch people and obviously interested in the Russians, Bretons and lots of other non-English speaking cultures.

I don’t find his portrayal of the Scots that convincing. The references to Mrs Walker’s Australian background hardly stand out. Maybe Ransome just wasn’t interested in the various Anglo-Saxon lineages. But I am.

Here’s what a female correspondent said about Kiwis and Brits – I’ve quoted her before on this; she says she doesn’t mind:

"Kiwis are reknown for the way we say quite cutting things to each other in jest - but then again, we're Brits at heart, I guess. (Americans would only get hurt and call their therapists) ... with that in mind ....

*smack!* you doofer!"

Here’s the same lady on Americans:

Rule #1 of the internet: Americans are hyper-sensitive.
Rule #2 of the internet: If the American you're talking to isn't
hyper-sensitive, they're either majorly perverted, or a bully.
Rule #3 of the internet: if you so much as suggest that said
American may be majorly perverted, or a bully, they will get hyper-
sensitive.

My Internet experience certainly bears out the last observations. What do you think..?

Cheers,

Andy Morley
