That's interesting about the compilation of the indices being based on a working class man who didn't drink etc. I think it was allegedly Lloyd George who in WW1 introduced the concept of pub licensing hours to try and increase productivity in the munitions factories, and I'm pretty sure that in PM we read of the driver of the Butcher's van hoping for a sixpenny (?) tip from the GA and anticipating a glass of beer on a warm day.
Still, we've all heard the expression which goes something like 'lies, ... d--d lies and statistics'.
