Americans *do* know about treacle, we just don't call it that. It's just
called molasses here, and LOTS of American recipes call for it. It is
an essential ingredient of Boston baked beans, for one. I make molasses
cookies (you know, biscuits) at Christmas time every year. We also use
brown sugar in a lot of baking and on hot breakfast cereals like oatmeal,
and brown sugar is simply refined sugar with molasses added back in to
turn it brown. One *sneaky* thing that U.S. commercial bakers do is to
sell brown bread and try to make you think it is whole-wheat bread. They
make it brown by adding molasses to a white-flour recipe and they label
it as 'Wheat Bread' (well,so is Wonder bread!) rather than 'whole-wheat
bread.'
If fruit squash is a carbonated fruit-flavored beverage, then we do have
that, too. Orange crush, Nehi grape, etc.
Marmite - well, you can keep that.... de gustibus non est disputandum. We
have *peanut butter*!!
