Regarding Robert Hill's comments about a "Jolly-boat", this has nothing to do with hilarity, a "jolly Boat" is defined by the OED as " a small clinker-built ship's boat of 4 or 6 oars, smaller than a 'cutter', from the middle low German-jolle or Dutch-jol".
