The picture "Not what I call homely" in chapter 1 of PM shows a large
expanse of the ceiling of the Beckfoot spare room, probably enough to
have included the electric (or gas) light if there had been one.
Which reminds me that I'm slightly surprised that nobody has mentioned
"homely" as a word with transatlantic variations of meaning.
