I too had a brush with Hard Knott Pass, back in the 70s. It had been raining overnight, and there were frequent streams running across the road. When we got to the summit, my wife looked at the slope down, got out and said she would meet me at the bottom.
I found it was only possible to see the road ahead if I stood up while driving. Not easy, but luckily there was no other traffic.
