In an idle moment, how about this story. There is a pub near my childhood home called The Romper. It was originally called The Lion or somesuch. Yhe story goes that a new pub sign was painted, but it wasnt very good and people said that the lion looked more like a "romping kitten". The name stuck in the shortened form, The Romper.

My point is, suppose The Lion, Thurne, or some other similarly named pub had a sign that looked to AR more like a Roaring Donkey than a lion? I wonder if there are any surviving photos of Thurne Lion.
