The school I went to in the early 40s, in mid-Wales, had gas lighting but no electricity. And my sister went to stay with a friend in the same area, in the early 50s, where they still had to use candles to go up to bed.
The war stopped a lot of electrification in its tracks. Until the mid-50s, Harrow Hill - which rises distinctly from the surrounding London suburbs - had DC mains supply. The conversion to AC had been completed at the bottom of the hill, but the war started just before they did the Hill itself.
