Just working my way through this discussion after a fortnight in Switzerland. My mother has suggested that the reason the GA sent a telegram instead of phoning was that she might not have a phone. My Grandparents did not have a telephone in the house until the mid 60's. The GA would have probably sent a telegram from the local Post Office.
