Last summer I impressed my father and family by going up and down Hardknott and Wrynose passes both ways in my brother's elderly Renault Espace (minivan for North Americans). The weather was clear and dry and there was not too much traffic so it wasn't too bad. However it scares the passengers who don't have the feeling of control that the driver does. My father was telling us of his trip over the passes on my parent's honeymoon. Their borrowed car wouldn't go up the hill even in first gear so they reversed up over the pass!
