Football (the non-North American term for Soccer) was always the more popular game at local day schools and surprisingly Eton. Most other "public" schools had rugger (rugby football, the 15 a side Union game) as their major autumn term sport.
One saying current when I was at school was that "Football is a gentlemen's game played by hooligans, rugger is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen".
