Of course the real geography influences SW, but as a writer has pointed out on Tarboard in another (rather more controversial) thread, artists in all media draw inspiration consciously & unconsciously from many sources. I am suggesting 'Sands' is another influence, not necessarily on SW's events but on its mood. Both books share a sense of unknown & unseen hostility, of things being not what they seem - there is confusion between safe & unsafe passsages, between enemies & allies; they also share a tension between the apparently opposing goals of mapping and adventure.
