I agree with Mike Field in general about Australia and the private/public school debate. We also call it the Public
Service rather than the Civil Service and thus the employees of the Public Service are Public Servants not Civil (or
Uncivil!) Servants.
There is one exception in the school arena. The top private schools (all boy schools) are called GPS schools
(Greater Public Schools).
The GPS schools all now include one government school per state as a sop to equality and these are fee free but
"selective" in so far that those who can attend are judged on merit if they come from the catchment area (about 30% of total new pupils per year),
with also right of entry being given to children of ex-students.
