I have worked in a maid-of-work capacity and know from experience that even if my working time was terminated by the departure of a guest, sometimes it was a cause for celebration. Since Rio was a holiday town, I would guess that there was an agency through which households could hire staff either permanently or temporarily. The housemaid might be one of those peripatetic souls who liked short terms of employment in different houses - but didn't like guests of the type of Miss Maria turner!
