Why didn't he look in the boat-house for some? The launch is described as a "motor" launch, not a "steam" launch. It would have at least been worth checking, even if he discovered it was diesel-fueled (we haven't seen any indication, aside from the yachting-cap, that he ever crewed on it, so wasin any position to know).
