But both Captain Flint and Mrs. Blacket, who were the primary users of both the car and motor launch, had been off for some time on their cruise. Would Cook or Billy have remembered to keep tabs on the petrol use? Obviously Billy wasn't in the habit of checking regularly or he never would have run dry with the GA as a passenger. Why didn't he look in the boat-house for some? The launch is described as a "motor" launch, not a "steam" launch. It would have at least been worth checking, even if he discovered it was diesel-fueled (we haven't seen any indication, aside from the yachting-cap, that he ever crewed on it, so wasin any position to know).
