I think Castor oil comes from the Castor bean... widely used in WWI for lubricating aircraft engines.. the pilot getting a faceful... and also the origin of the CASTROL company...
Giovanni Guareschi in the "Don Camillo" books ( a jolly good read in themselves) relates fascist groups in Italy forcing their adversaries (individually, at gunpoint) to quaff entire bottles.
