You are straying into hypothetical cases here, Peter. My point was that, whatever its merits or otherwise, the Tucker piece would never have qualified for MM, being already published by Tarpaulin in the Lit Weekend Proceedings. It is all to the good that Tim has put it on his Literary pages, since the 1993 proceedings are not generally available by now.
I haven't received your index yet, but I seem to remember some other MM articles that strayed far from your supposed Party Line: one by Peter Hunt especially comes to mind.
I don't know to what extent previous editors have had their MM content dictated by Tarpaulin. All I do know is that there have been several of them, and they seemed to have personal policies. It is inevitable that these will sometimes differ from some of their readers' preferences, but that doesn't imply that nothing with an individual voice will ever get published.
