Since I'm not aware of any particular link between Ransome and the
ancient Romans, I assume Peter posted this solely because of the
Hart-Davis connection.

Adam Hart-Davis appears quite often on British TV. He presents a
series of half-hour programmes called "Local Heroes", which I think
was originally on ITV in the Yorkshire region only, but which over the
last few years has had several short national runs on BBC2. In each
programme he visits an area of Britain (or on one occasion Italy), talks
about three or four inventors or scientists who lived in that area, and
reconstructs modern versions of some of their inventions and experiments.
In this programme he travels by bicycle wearing lurid pink and yellow
clothes, and comes across as almost breathlessly enthusiastic.
